The Belly Dancing Bedlah

More than likely, if you have watched television or movies you have seen belly dancing. The clothing these dancers wear as they entertain in movies or on television all have similarities, pretty much giving them the same overall look. Although, the costumes are pretty, they are leaving you with an impression, that might not be true.

Nowadays, the only place you can usually see belly dancing in person is at a night club. Although, this really isn't belly dancing, it can be considered a run off of belly dancing. It is possible for you to view the real forms of belly dancing on a DVD. More than likely you will be seeing Egyptian dancers performing. The Egyptian belly dancing seems to be the most enjoyed as well as the most commonly found.

In Arabic, the style of the clothing we are accustomed to seeing on belly dancers is called bedlah. However, in English this is translated to suit. In the 1930's the bedlah was introduced by the Egyptian belly dancers. Soon after the Egyptian's introduced the bedlah it was used in nearby regions by the belly dancers, as well.

In the 1930's the attire we now recognize as the norm for belly dancers was actually introduced by the United States, actually in Hollywood. The attire was changed in the United States in order to portray a fantasy harem in many of the movies that were being produced at this time. In the Middle East, the attire we now know as belly dancing clothing was not part of the attire that was used there. However, this was adopted in Cairo, Egypt as a way to entice Western tourists to visit the club, by a club owner.

The typical belly dancing attire is a fitted bra with dangling accents, such as tassels, fringe and or coins. Usually, the same decorative accessories can be found on the belt as well. This belt is usually attached to the top of the skirt. It was typical in the western areas for the women to also wear veils as part of their attire. This was a modification and not typical in the original belly dancing attire.

King Farouk, in 1940 hired a ballet instructor to teach his daughters the art of belly dancing. The instructor was from Russia. It was normal in Egypt for the women to wear a full dress with beads. These dresses were designed by the specifications of less formal attire, and geared more towards casual wear. However, there is no link between the styles of today and the styles of the past for belly dancing. Modern style began from when Hollywood became part of the belly dancing world.
